Ross Lyness - Trombone TutorRoss enjoys a busy and varied career as a freelance trombonist and performs regularly across awide variety of genres including chamber music, contemporary and new music, jazz and bigband, orchestral, opera and commercial work for television and radio.
After completing his primary degree in Law, Ross went on to obtain a Masters in Trombone Performance from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London after which he lived and worked in London and Barcelona for a number of years. Now based in Northern Ireland with his wife and two daughters, Ross travels the world to perform. |
As well as appearing regularly with all of the professional orchestras in Ireland, Ross travels extensively to work as a trombonist, with recent highlights including the BBC Scottish Symphony
Orchestra, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Scottish Ballet, Orchesta Nazionale della RAI, Turin, Orquesta de Grand Teatre del Liceu, Barcelona, Hong Kong Sinfonietta and the Cyprus
Symphony Orchestra, which Ross visits several times a year to play as Guest Principal Trombone. Ross has also played on shows such as Chicago, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, West Side Story, Sweet Charity and Hairspray, to name a few. In August 2018, Ross was invited to join the European Brass Collective and performed in the opening concert of the annual Brucknertage in Austria to great
critical acclaim.

Last year marked Ross’s sixth season as Principal Trombone with the Wexford Opera Festival
Orchestra and he is currently playing principal trombone in the collaborative production of Mozart’s Magic Flute with the Irish Chamber Orchestra and Irish National Opera. Other forthcoming highlights include a tour of South America in June with the ICO, a trip to Cyprus for the final concerts of the season with the CySO and a performance of Stravinsky’s Soldier’s Tale in the Kilkenny Arts Festival with the Fews Ensemble, featuring Irish actor, Ciaran Hinds, as the narrator/devil.
